Do you know what rule is date de naissance? I was expecting date de la naissance. Merci.

It is a "noun complement" like "une tasse de thé".The second noun (without its indefinite article) gives further information about the first noun about content, material, purpose, quality...LanguageButcher - 10

So date de naissance belongs to "purpose"? Thanks.Sitesurf - 25

I'd rather say "nature", since it specifies the type of date (my list was not exhaustive anyway), like "date d'anniversaire", "date de mariage", "date de décès".If you consider "une clé de porte", it compares it with other types of keys like "une clé de coffre", "une clé de contact". the second noun is the universe of reference of the first noun. If you compare it with a possessive, you get "une clé de la porte" (a specific door) or "une clé du coffre" (a specific safe). This works like "une voiture de sport" (sports car). It happens when there is no adjective available to do the job, or when the available adjective does not give the same meaning: "une voiture sportive" (sporty car). Also, sometimes, the preposition "à" is also used to differentiate the purpose from the content:- une tasse à thé = a tea cup (purpose)
- une tasse de thé = a cup of tea (content)
What you have to keep in mind is that contrary to English, there are no attributive nouns in French.
